I want to work together with you to build a home for people who live on garbage dumps.

A safe home, especially for children who suffer from diseases; children who are constantly in danger of being crushed by bulldozers and garbage trucks; for children who constantly breath in poisonous fumes and smoke. For six months, 18 Fellows will have the chance to experience something fundamental: through interaction with the poorest of the poor they will get to know themselves better. It might not always be a very easy task.

One thing is especially important to me! Namely that we become friends in our project, across all social and cultural boundaries. That we listen to each other and respect one another's opinions so that we can experience that wealth is not necessarily something material. Everyone who sets out on this project with us should not ask ”how can I help?”. I would like everyone to ask themselves “what can I learn?”. Everyone who visits us should be open for surprises.

For more than twenty years I have been working with people on the fringes of society in Cebu,

engaged  with the concerns of  impoverished fishers or young girls who are being sold in the red light districts of the city. And still I remain an optimist. Even on hard days, I and my whole team know: we will never give up, because there are people all over the world who care.’
